The iPhone 18 Pro is Apple’s most photographer-focused flagship to date, headlined by the industry’s first mechanical variable aperture on an iPhone and a new 2nm A20 Pro chip that finally addresses thermal throttling. It starts at ₹1,64,900 in India for the 256GB eSIM variant, with sales opening September 18.
What Makes It Different?
The variable aperture is the headline feature. Six laser-cut blades physically open and close to offer four stops: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. This lets you shoot with shallow depth of field for portraits or stop down for group shots where everyone stays sharp. The f/1.48 maximum aperture delivers roughly 50 percent better low-light performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, though the real-world benefit is often a slightly shallower depth of field rather than a dramatic low-light leap.
Apple has also added genuine Pro
Controls to the native camera app, giving you manual shutter speed, white
balance, aperture, and a live histogram, features previously requiring
third-party apps like Halide.
The A20 Pro chip is built on a 2nm process with a redesigned thermal architecture. The die connects directly to a vapor chamber three times the size of the iPhone 17 Pro’s, which Apple claims delivers 40 percent more sustained performance. Battery life also jumps significantly on eSIM-only models: up to 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max.
The Dynamic Island is smaller and can now display three Live Activities simultaneously. Storage now reaches 2TB for the first time on an iPhone.
Indicative Pricing
In India, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at
₹1,64,900 for 256GB, ₹1,89,900 for 512GB, ₹2,39,900 for 1TB, and ₹3,14,900 for
2TB. The Pro Max runs ₹1,79,900, ₹2,04,900, ₹2,54,900, and ₹3,29,900
respectively. US pricing starts at $1,199. Pre-orders opened September 12, with
sales beginning September 18.
Camera and Video Review
The 48MP main sensor with variable aperture is a meaningful tool, but it is not the revolutionary leap some may expect. Smartphone sensors are physically small, so the difference between f/1.48 and f/1.8 in bokeh is subtle rather than transformative. The bigger win is having optical aperture control for video, where you can adapt to changing light without relying on software tricks.
The f/4.0 stop is useful for landscape and group shots where you need edge-to-edge sharpness, but be aware that diffraction may actually soften images at f/4 compared to f/2.8. For most everyday shooting, leaving the aperture on automatic and letting the camera choose between f/1.48 and f/1.8 will serve you well.
The telephoto remains at 4x optical zoom with 8x hybrid, unchanged from the prior generation. This is the camera system’s weak point compared to Chinese flagships like the Vivo X300 Ultra, which offer sharper macro and portrait results from their periscope lenses.
Video capabilities include
post-capture Cinematic effects at up to 60fps, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse,
and improved Audio Mix algorithms for voice isolation. Apple has also
introduced Reference Image, which cryptographically signs sensor data at
capture to verify a photo was camera-captured rather than AI-generated.
