Osttaad, Santacruz – What makes it a must visit?

What does it mean to dine slowly, to savour stories passed down through spice and smoke? How can a single menu capture the warmth of shared meals across borders and generations? Osttaad, in Santa Cruz, leans into these questions with quiet confidence, offering a dining experience that feels both rooted and revelatory.

The menu is a rich journey through the culinary heritage of Persia, the Middle East, and North India — regions united by a shared love for bold spices, slow cooking, and generous hospitality. Expect tender meats simmered to perfection, deeply aromatic gravies, fragrant rice dishes, handcrafted breads, and vibrant accompaniments. Each plate reflects an ingredient-first philosophy, celebrating balance, depth of flavour, and an elegant yet unfussy style of presentation.

Our quirky choices included:

Osttaad’s menu offers a thoughtful interplay of texture, tradition, and innovation. The tender coconut and raw mango salad is a refreshing opener — light, tangy, and full of tropical brightness. The Mushroom Balkawa (the showstopper) surprises with its layered crunch and umami depth, a clever nod to the classic sweet. Earthy and smoky, the raw banana and pulled jackfruit shashlik holds its own with bold spice and satisfying heft. Surely, a must try.

For the mains, we chose the fresh methi chaman fish curry which brings a delicate balance of rustic bitterness and creaminess. Don’t miss out on the comforting richness of the Osttaad-e-Adasi, a soulful black gram dal which is super-slupry and delish. Well paired with the meal the Afghan khameeri and sheermal (a nom nom creation) — both soft, fragrant breads that elevate every bite.

For desserts, we opted for the Umali as a warm, indulgent finale. Comforting yet elegant, not too overbearing on the sweet quotient, it’s a dessert that lingers long after the last spoonful.

For cocktails, we chose the Tashkent Twilight – a tangy variation with superb lilting notes. The Bartender Special (not in the menu) was a sparkling delight, just loved it. Ifshan Rose, the mocktail, has an Iranian feel to the sweetness which made the meal more enjoyable.

OSTTAAD’S menu surely manages to feel both inventive and deeply rooted. The gravies are light, silky and the smooth textures are lilting. Our rating is 10 Stars!!
