The interview:

Can you tell us a little bit about how you got started and attained the position of an influencer?-

My early beginning has a funny story attached to it. I wanted to be a TikToker but somehow that did not work out for me. One of my friends suggested I start using Instagram as it has tremendous reach. I wasn’t sure much about it because i was self -conscious back then. But to overcome this fear, i started posting my pictures and i just hoped it wouldn’t be a nightmare. Fortunately that worked wonders for me. I wanted to share my story and when i did, people could relate to it. That’s how i started gaining followers and hence i gained the status of an influencer.

How important is authenticity to your review when it comes to influencer marketing? How do you maintain your authentic voice, viewpoints and recommendations on your social media while still partnering with brands?

Authentic reviews hold a top-notch 100 percent rating for me. I actually test the products for a couple of days before reviewing them and then sharing my points on my channels. I believe my audience needs to know what’s right and what’s wrong.

Also, being a creator first, the love of your followers and audience is of prime importance. I always base my reviews from an audience perspective and share my points on my channel. I have always wanted to be ‘real and raw’ because that’s what i stand for and so does my page. Till date, I have honoured the ‘be realistic’ fundamental strongly and I would continue to do so in future. If i do not like a brand or a product, I let them know without any fear.

Have there been any brands or promotions you have refused since you didn’t believe in them?

Yes, I have refused a couple of brands even though the payback was good since i did not identify with the product. If i can’t trust the brand’s authenticity, how can i share it with my audience and advertise something that i am not sure about?  I think my page will lose its foundation and it would send a wrong message.

Do you take advance part-payments before you start creating content for a brand? How do you safeguard your payments? Any cases where you haven’t been paid your dues?

As much as i would love to do that, I haven’t yet got the chance to do so. Maybe in the near future i would have the privilege. For the time being, I have co-ordinators whom I deal with. I do ask for people in contact from the brand. If in case i do not get the payment, it gets tough since the mediatory doesn’t respond.

There have been some instances, where people or known brands haven’t paid me. It is painful when you trust people to deliver on their commitments when you have done full justice towards them. Influencing looks easy on the surface which is not the case at all. I have learnt my lesson the hard way and hence i am more cautious.

What platform, besides Instagram, do you think will be big in influencer marketing for 2021?

I think MX Takatak, Chingari, Moj have already gained their reputation. Rizzle hasn’t started advertising yet. But, I am sure if Rizzle has the potential to be one of the best influencer platforms. It has some unique USPs that no other app does. If we are talking internationally, Clubhouse is the next hype that everyone is talking about.

Do you have any big goals as an influencer for 2021?

We all have goals and so do I. I want to grow more like organically on the platform, change my style and enhance my skills. Also I have some brands in my bucket-list that I would like to work with and travel around. Hopefully it will come true.

5 tips for budding influencers who want to succeed in this field:

·       Be unique and authentic - never forget what your long-term vision is.

·       Experiment all the time. It doesn't hurt to try something new, it helps you evolve and grow.

·       Write down your ideas. Being a creative conceptualiser, you never know when you are hit with this magical idea. Jot it down before it gets erased from your memory.

·       Trust your process and style of imparting the message. You do not have to be jealous of somebody else's success. Just trust yourself and path you have chosen. You will get there at one point. You do not have to be competitive.

·       Have patience - I mean literally.
