Should web series content be censored?

There was a time when most viewers felt that there wouldn’t be a market for paid content since television was offering it for free. Over a period of time, there has been a huge binge-watching movement which has taken over our lives. Most of us are hooked to OTT platforms for the variety of content which is being offered.

WHY INDIANS ARE HOOKED ONTO OTT PLATFORMS?

The influx of mass binge watching started during the Corona lockdown phase. All OTT platforms found a surge in the viewership to the extent that their servers were overloaded and jammed.

Indians love different content without any restrictions. Here it stems more from content which hasn’t been censored, resorts to crude comedy, frequent use of cuss words and handling provocative and scandalous topics.

Even today, India continues to be a sex-starved nation. The YouTube channels featuring the Hot bhabhi series have millions of views which are free to air and without any restrictions. Although such content is a bit mild, it is available for voyeuristic pleasures of the Indians.

WHY OTT PLATFORMS SHOULDN’T BE CENSORED?

Netflix has been around for years and has been providing some excellent international content. So has YouTube which does engage the viewers with some titillation videos. #MumbaiHighLife believes that every viewer has the right to place restrictions on their viewing choices, it is the narrow-minded people who refuse to change with the times.

Content is obviously a freedom of expression which is our birthright. Today news channels offer free and frank reporting which would otherwise have been submerged and keep the audiences in the dark. We all look for original content with no restrictions which highlight (and not glorify) the issues which are rampant in our country. The #Jamtaara web series was a big hit for its original content.

#MUMBAIHIGHLIFE WOULD SURELY WANT:

That soft porn or full porn Indian OTT platforms to be barred from airing the content. There has been a plethora of full porn OTT channels which are brazenly broadcasting Indian porn. These sites should be targeted first. Even #Ullu channel which started off as a soft porn OTT has now been changing its content with a mild tinge after it got its subscribers.

Indians need content which shows the realities of life. Yes the overdose of cuss words and mandatory sex scenes seem to be the accepted norm for success of a web series. Every parent has the vision to train their kids on what to watch at their age. We don’t want the censorship to creep in and ridicule our sensibilities like the Indian Censorship board has been doing.
